How to Buy Original Paintings Online: A Practical Guide

Buying paintings online has become a normal part of the art world, but it still makes many collectors nervous. Can you trust what you see on screen? How do you know the work is genuine? As an artist who offers original art for sale through my own website, I want to share what I believe every buyer should know.

Evaluating Art Through a Screen

The first challenge of buying art online is that you are making a judgment based on a photograph — and no photograph fully reproduces a painting. Colors shift depending on your monitor. Texture disappears. Scale is lost. A responsible seller will provide multiple images: the full work, close-up details showing brushwork and surface texture, the work in situ or beside a reference object for scale, and the back of the canvas showing stretcher bars and any labels or markings.

On my own site, I document each work with high-resolution photography and detailed information about medium, dimensions, and provenance. If you are considering a purchase and want to see additional images or a video walkthrough, the studio will always provide them on request.

Authenticity and Trust

When you buy paintings online, the question of authenticity is paramount. Every original work I sell comes with a signed certificate of authenticity, detailed provenance information, and photographic documentation. Buy directly from the artist's website or from a gallery with a verifiable track record. Be wary of secondary market platforms that offer original paintings without clear provenance.

Research the artist before purchasing. Look for exhibition history, museum presence, critical writing about their work. An artist whose work is held by institutions — in my case, the Erarta Museum, the Imago Mundi collection, Google Arts & Culture — has been vetted by professionals whose judgment you can trust.

The Buying Process

A good buying art online experience should feel like a conversation, not a transaction. When you inquire about a work on my site, you receive not just a price but context: the work's series, its exhibition history, its place within my broader practice. Shipping is handled professionally — crating, insurance, customs documentation are all managed by the studio. Worldwide delivery is standard.

For collectors who are new to buying original art for sale online, my recommendation is simple: start with what moves you. Write to the artist or gallery. Ask questions. A genuine seller will welcome your curiosity. The goal is not a quick sale but the beginning of a relationship between a collector and a body of work.
